WHAT IS  TEN-T Europarlamentin vihreän ryhmän ratahanke

What was the intention?

When integrating the trans-European networks into the Treaty of Maastricht and setting up the TEN-T guidelines, the smooth functioning of the internal market and strengthening economic and social cohesion were the main driving forces. Within the TEN-T guidelines sustainable mobility of persons and goods was as well another objective within the European dimension of the whole program.

What is the present situation?

At the moment it is quite evident that the TEN-T program is far behind its goals. Especially regarding the problem of climate change due to the huge increases in environmental unfriendly modes of transport like road and air transport. The whole European transport policy faces the problem of going on as always and not changing in direction. Although some good projects have materialised in the past, the big problem of the TEN-T program is its slow progress especially in rail projects. A major lack of financing is one of the main problems of the network.

What will future bring?

If European transport policy is to seriously contribute in the fight against climate change it is crucial to reconsider the trans-European network as well as transport policy under the premise
